Sabra Recalls Hummus Over Possible Listeria Contamination

Sabra Dipping Co. is voluntarily recalling some of its hummus dips and spreads due to possible Listeria contamination, the United States Food and Drug Administration reported.

Although the bacteria has not been found in products that have been tested, samples of Listeria monocytogenes were found at a plant used to manufacture the products. This recall affected products distributed in the U.S. and Canada.

screen-shot-2016-11-21-at-1-26-46-pm“We have invested heavily in technology and enhancing our processes and protocols, with guidance and input from external experts, to develop and put in place industry-leading food safety procedures, such as testing finished product from the production line every two minutes for pathogens including listeria,” said Sabra Dipping Co. CEO Shali Shalit Shoval in a statement. “We want to reassure our consumers that our procedures include extensive finished product testing, and no products tested positive for contaminants. We are taking action because consumer safety is a top priority.”

The various products were made before November 8. Consumers are asked to discard any product with a “Best Before” date up through January 23, 2017. The “Best Before” date can be found on the lid of each package.

According to the FDA, Listeria can cause healthy individuals to suffer short-term symptoms such as a fever, severe headaches, nausea and diarrhea. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths for pregnant women.

This recall does not include the Sabra Organic Hummus, Sabra Salsa, Sabra Guacamole and Sabra Greek Yogurt Dips.

In April 2015, Sabra recalled 30,000 cases of hummus because of Listeria contamination.
